The median down payment for a house in the US is $31,500, but that figure varies drastically depending on where in the country you are. Using analysis by Bankrate, Julie Peasley mapped the median down payment for a single-family home in every state.
Key Findings:
-
Washington DC, Florida and Hawaii are tied for the most expensive state to make a down payment, with a median of $98,670.
-
The fourth- and fifth-priciest areas are Washington State and California where homebuyers face median down payments in the mid-$80,000s.
-
When it comes to the states with the cheapest down payments, Alabama, West Virginia, Louisiana and Mississippi all average less than $10,000.
